Mindful Self-Compassion About the Course
Mindful Self-Compassion™ is an empirically supported 8-week program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. It combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion to enhance our capacity for emotional wellbeing.
MSC is an opportunity to explore how we typically respond when difficulties arise in our lives and to learn tools for becoming a warm, supportive companion to ourselves and others.
MSC is primarily a compassion training program rather than mindfulness training like MBSR, although mindfulness is the foundation of self-compassion. MSC is also not psychotherapy – the emphasis of MSC is on building emotional resources rather than addressing old wounds. Positive change occurs naturally as we develop the capacity to be with ourselves in a kinder, more compassionate way.
A moment of self-compassion can change your entire day. A string of such moments can change the course of your life.
Mindful Self-Compassion Course Details
8 weeks, from January 10–February 28, 2022
Mondays | 6:00 PM-8:30 PM (MST)
3.5-hour “retreat” on Saturday, February 5

MSC is designed for the general public. No prior meditation or mindfulness experience is necessary.
The course includes 8 weekly sessions and a 3.5-hour “retreat” on one weekend day. Participants are encouraged to experiment with practices and exercises at home between sessions totaling about 30 minutes a day. Program activities include short talks, experiential exercises, meditation, group discussion, and home practices. the goal is for participants to directly experience self-compassion and learn practices that evoke self-compassion in daily life.
It is recommended that participants read one or both of the following books before or during the program:
- Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself by Kristin Neff
- The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion by Christopher Germer
